The Chehalis River flows into the Harrison River about 30 km northeast of Mission, BC. The Chehalis Indian Band has endured numerous flood events on the Chehalis River in recent years, leading to loss of land, the inconvenience of sandbagging and the constant threat of property damage.

For the past several weeks there has been increasing awareness of the above average snowpack in the catchment area of the Fraser River. In mid May snowpacks in the Upper Fraser were up to 75% above average for the time of year and still accumulating snow, while in the Lower Fraser they were up to 30% above normal.

Residents of the Chilliwack River valley in the Lower Mainland of BC recently experienced the latest in a series of devastating floods that left damaged homes, uprooted trees, dead fish, mud and angry evacuated residents in its wake. There have been several such floods, including one in 1990 when one house was completely washed away.
