The Chehalis River flows into the Harrison River about 30 km northeast of Mission, BC. The Chehalis Indian Band has endured numerous flood events on the Chehalis River in recent years, leading to loss of land, the inconvenience of sandbagging and the constant threat of property damage.
The two km long Chehalis River dyke was substantially completed during 2007 and will be finished in 2008. It consists of a raised roadway, a raised portion of the former riverside dyke, a new connector dyke, a raised setback dyke and a one km long extension to the setback dyke. The alignment was selected so as to minimize the impact on fish habitat and to allow the river space to migrate across the alluvial fan. The dyke protects the Sts’ailes Lhawathet Lalem (Chehalis Healing Centre), a graveyard and several residences.
Hay & Company was responsible for the survey work, hydrotechnical analysis and design and construction inspection, while our parent company EBA Engineering Consultants Ltd., provided geotechnical design, construction inspection and environmental services.
